PRESIDENTIAL POSTCARD!
Greetings and Bonjour from Montreal ... my last little fling before
the teaching season begins, bringing full days and high expectations.
Your Guild Board has had a busy summer, getting out that "smashing" new
directory and having it available in libraries the first week of
August. We’re now working on the calendar for the rest of the season.
As the new season begins, I want to wish all of you good luck and many
rewarding and gratifying "moments musicaux!" - Rhoda Forté
STUDIO SUPPLIES and DISCOUNTS
As you shop for office supplies and materials to assist you in your
teaching, you might consider that many stores will offer an educational
discount. All you have to do is ask! First, ask the manager if they
offer a "educators’ discount." You will want to ask this before you
tell them you are an independent music teacher. If they answer "yes",
that will give them less room to debate once you tell them that you
teach independently. The business may want an ID card that "proves" you
are a teacher. This is where keeping your RCMTG Membership card handy
is important. You should also have a written statement on letterhead
from your studio saying that you are authorized by that studio to make
purchases. Now, the store manager knows you are an independent teacher.
They just need to make a copy of these documents to give to their
accountant. They might even issue you a special card to use when making
purchases. Not all businesses will offer these discounts, but there’s
no harm in asking!
FILM CLUB and BOOK CLUB updates!
We promised a 2nd showing of "Carnegie Hall" (1947) for
those who couldn’t make the June date! This 2nd showing (at
George Bryant’s home) is this Sunday Sept. 11th at 7 pm.
RSVP 480-5036. And October 9th at 7 pm is the Book Club (at
Rhoda Forte’s home) discussing Frank Conroy’s Body and Soul. RSVP
634-8019. This session was postponed from last May when a tree crashed
into Rhoda’s home! Both the film and the book deal with a young man
growing up as a classical and jazz pianist in 1940's NYC!

DONALD WAXMAN
"My meeting with the Guild in October
will be a mix of reminiscences of my early years in Rockland from the
1950's on and a preview of new piano pedagogical works of mine soon to
be published. All of this will occur 10 days before my 80th
birthday on Oct. 29th!
"In looking back over some 50 years, I
will touch on how Jho and I arrived in Nyack in 1952, when much of
Rockland was still a very rural place, and how we built our small
private music school, The Music House, in an old South Nyack Victorian,
and how out of that teaching situation the Pageants series and
the Fifty Etudes evolved.
"In looking ahead, I will play through
the miniature tone poem for young pianists The Legend of David and
Goliath as well as examples from the set of 175 miniature technical
pieces that I call Exertudes."
50th ANNIVERSARY of
the ROCKLAND CONSERVATORY
will be celebrated Saturday Oct. 29th
at IBM Palisades with Dinner and Concert. $$$ raised goes toward
