PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

The summer is quietly, but all too quickly coming to an end with my teaching schedule looming on the horizon. But before I say good-bye to another lovely, relaxing, and renewing of the spirit summer vacation, I would like to share with you some thoughts about the summer music festival which I had the pleasure of attending.

My friends have been cajoling me for years to visit them in early July so that I could attend the Eastern Music Festival, hosted by Guilford College in the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina. This year, I finally agreed and was quite impressed.

The EMF is the culmination of a lifelong dream of Sheldon Morgenstern, who envisioned a summer music program devoted to the teaching and performance of classical music to aspiring young orchestral and piano students between the ages of fourteen and twenty from around the world. The summer music program offers students an opportunity to study their instrument in a two-to-one ratio with faculty members. Students perform major orchestral works, give piano recitals, and attend master classes in a loving, constructive, intellectual atmosphere.

An Artist-in-Residence program was also begun, and many famous musicians are more than willing to share their expertise with these young musicians. Such notable performers as Yo-Yo-Ma, Andre Watts, Cecile Licaud, Midori, to name a few, have been guest artists performing and teaching at the EMF.

Do you have a student who is interested in performance, or looking for a summer program that will enrich their musicianship with an opportunity to meet others with similar interests? You might want to suggest they audition for this outstanding program. I will be happy to research the cost and procedure involved in applying to EMF.

Before this message becomes too lengthy, I will close by wishing everyone an outstanding year of teaching. I hope to see many of you at our annual Kick-Off-Dinner which is now titled "FALL FANFARE". Please join us to welcome the new season, share ideas, and just visit with dear friends and colleagues. - Marie
